In January 2008, at a Wal-Mart Dispatch Center in Shenzhen, China, 55 employees sat for two days in a meeting room to demand back overtime pay. Instead of paying overtime, Wal-Mart had given the employees "compensative rest". Wal-Mart's public relations department said that the company is in the process of researching the overtime problem and will be able to give a response at a later time. According to Pan Dungang of Guangdong's Wen Tian law firm using compensative rest instead of overtime pay is illegal.
